Misunderstanding

There will be times you will be misunderstood and/or will misunderstand the words, actions, inactions or body language of your friends.

For simplicity, I’ll define this as the lack of understanding. It usually happens between people in human relationships and friendships. It can be as simple as a miscommunication that can be fixed upon further interrogation or as grievious as the kind that starts feuds between between brothers, sisters, even nations.

One way to scale this hurdle Everytime it shows its face is to actually expect it. People who were born to the same parents and lived most of their lives together, even twins have misunderstandings. So it’s not native to your friendships or relationships.

Expect that people would need you to clarify stuff, expect that people would need to reiterate before they clearly understand you, although I think the more we know people the more we understand what they mean in fewer word. Be quick to ask questions to gain clarity, as one thing that’s worse than misunderstanding someone is to assume you understood what was communicated when you didnt.

Misunderstandings are good places to build strong friendships from, I for one have a particular close friend and this friendship was birthed from a fight we had in JS1. They create room for people to better understand how the next person thinks and with this information we can choose to continue and further strengthen such friendships or totally discontinue or not allow the roots of such friendships go deep.

I, for one, have learnt from misunderstandings with a certain ‘her’ to communicate clearer with ever increasing clarity, and it’s one of the reasons I can even clearly articulate this thoughts in the format you are reading now.

There will be times you will be misunderstood and/or will misunderstand the words, actions, inactions or body language of your friends. What we do with misunderstandings is left to us.

Hope this helps your friendships.
